What it is
helloyellow is "a friendly wifi-enabled voice messaging app for the Playdate". It uses the console's built-in microphone and speaker. You record messages up to 10 minutes long, send them to friends, and listen to replies. Group chats hold up to 10 people (you plus nine friends). You can send emoji and reactions, some unlocked from popular Playdate games, view each other's Playdate achievements, and record offline voice notes to yourself. It needs Wi-Fi, users must be 13 or older, and it isn't available in some countries.
It's by Jon Simantov, the developer of Cranky Cove. The Verge reported in December 2025 that the free version allows 2-minute messages, with up to 10 minutes in the $5 full version. The full version reached the Catalog in February 2026 for $5, and a free version is on itch.io. It was a finalist for Best App or Knickknack at the 2025 Playdate Community Awards.
