HYPER GROOVE AX is a rebuild of HYPER GROOVE, a 2014 student project made in a proprietary C++ engine that won Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Provost Award for its Interactive Media and Game Development program that year. The Playdate version was "rebuilt from the ground up with a new aesthetic and new soundtrack."
You beat-match with the D-pad and face buttons across two note highways and switch between them with the crank, chasing the highest score. It ships with nine original songs "ranging from electronica to metal," with more planned after launch, and it's localized in English and Japanese. The accessibility note says it needs "dexterous use" of the buttons and D-pad, while the crank doesn't need high precision: you only need to know it gets turned both ways.
It came out in the Playdate Catalog on 27 Oct 2026 for $5. The developer declares that no generative AI was used.
Who made it
Kohococoa Design Works LLC, which the Catalog page says "is Cian Rice."
