What it is
In Otto's Galactic Groove!!, alien music producer Tomie needs inspiration, and her pet space sea slug Otto sets off across the galaxy to find it. Each planet has its own characters, storyline and musical style. You play along by steering an oval catch zone up and down with the crank and pressing buttons as notes cross it. Reviewers compare it to Trombone Champ and Theatrhythm. The story is told in crank-scrolled comics by Edie Woolf, across 16 original songs by Rupert Cole. It also includes 14 bonus tracks from other Playdate soundtracks, including Gun Trails, Bloom and Reel-istic Fishing.
There are three difficulty levels and a long list of assists: left-handed mode, auto-crank, auto button presses and extended timing windows. That's why it was a finalist for Accomplishment in Accessibility at the 2025 Playdate Community Awards. It also has online scoreboards and a web-based level editor for building and sharing songs. Early players found the note timing off at launch, and a patch within about a day fixed it.
It came out in Week 3 of Playdate Season Two (12 June 2025) alongside Long Puppy and now sells for $12 in the Catalog. At 172 MB, it's one of the biggest Playdate downloads. It was also a 2025 Community Awards finalist for Best Arcade Game and Best Soundtrack.
